What is the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
1499 "By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ."
Annointing of the Sick at St. Francis of Assisi
St. James says, "Are any among you sick? Let them send for the priests of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven”. (James 5:14-15)
Persons dealing with terminal illness, over the age of 65, receiving major or invasive surgery, or are hospitalized for serious health issues are eligible for the Anointing of the Sick. Several groups stand ready to aid the sick and elderly of the parish. In addition, priests will visit the sick in hospitals each week and are happy to meet with people after any Mass and offer the Anointing to those in need. Communion can be taken once a week to those who can’t attend Mass. You may also contact the church office to arrange a time with a priest. If necessary don’t hesitate to contact a priest or call the emergency number listed at the bottom of this page.
Periodic healing Masses and prayer services are offered at St. Francis of Assisi that include Anointing of the Sick. Details of these services can be found in the parish bulletin, calendar, and website.
